What do athletic trainers do?
- Athletic Trainers (ATs) examine, diagnose, treat, and provide education in prevention to their patients with acute and chronic injuries, including medical conditions.
- They are experts in the prevention, immediate emergency care, management, and rehabilitation of injuries that result from participation in athletics and physical activity.
- They are a highly qualified, integral member of the sports medicine team and work in cooperation with physicians, parents, coaches and administrators to maintain the safety and well-being of adults and children who compete in all levels of athletic competition – from amateur to elite, and physically active populations.
- Many people think athletic trainers and personal trainers are the same career, but they are not. There is a significant difference in the education, skill set and job duties of an athletic trainer versus that of a personal trainer.
- Athletic training uses a medical model for professional education that includes both didactic and clinical education.
