Pre-Healthcare Administration

What do healthcare administrators do?

Healthcare administrators, often referred to as healthcare executives or health managers, oversee, plan, direct, and coordinate day-to-day management of healthcare services. They may manage an entire facility, a specific clinical area or department, or a medical practice for a group of physicians.

Healthcare administrators rarely work directly with patients. Instead, they are charged with developing and maintaining our healthcare systems that address the health of our communities. They help to shape policy, make needed changes and lead our nation’s health-related organizations in a way that serves individual patients by helping to improve our health care systems.

Common responsibilities of healthcare administrators may include:
  • Establishing procedures and systems for healthcare service delivery;
  • Adherence and adaptation to healthcare laws, regulations and technology;
  • High-level meetings with investors/governing boards;
  • Open, regular communication with medical staff and department heads;
  • Facility budgeting, staff scheduling, hiring, patient fees and billing;
  • Tracking supplies, patient records and satisfaction, and evaluating staff;
  • Improving overall efficiency and financial effectiveness of healthcare services;
  • Creating educational programs.
